PHANTOMS, the debut solo album from renowned Perth bassist/composer NICK ABBEY (PhD / 2022 APRA PDA shortlist / 2020 Freedman Jazz Fellowship nominee / 2015 National Jazz Awards semi-finalist / 4x WAM Jazz Song of the Year winner) is OUT NOW on Newmarket Music.
Phantoms reunites Abbey with long-time collaborators Chris Foster (piano) and Daniel Susnjar (drums) for an exquisitely-recorded and highly-charged personal statement: a suite of emotive and striking original compositions brought to life by the trio’s fiery musical rapport.
These three remarkable Western Australian musicians have been repeatedly honoured by WAM, ABC, the Freedman Fellowships, and the Jazz Bell Awards. Each of them lectures at the prestigious WA Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), where Abbey has also recently completed his PhD research. They have collectively shared the stage with the likes of Chick Corea, John Scofield, Steve Miller, Dave Grusin, Joshua Redman, Dave Douglas, Terence Blanchard, Bobby McFerrin, James Morrison, Troy Roberts, Paul Grabowsky, Jamie Oehlers, Tom O’Halloran, Peter Bernstein, Vivian Sessoms, George Garzone, Paul Bollenback, Alex Norris, Jim Pugh, Howard Levy, Kate Cebrano, and Tal Cohen, making them a formidable and in-demand ensemble.
Featuring the 2019 WAM Jazz Song of the Year (Song For The Days When) and 2020 nominee (The Constant), this album is a very special achievement from the burgeoning WA jazz scene—not to be missed!
I would like say a heartfelt thanks to the WA Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries ‘Culture and the Arts’ grants program and all of the individuals who contributed through the Pozible crowdfunding campaign for their enormous support, without which this project could not have happened!
